More about Bukit Timah
History of Bukit Timah
The first known reference to the area was made on an 1828 map by Jackson and Frankin. It is believed that the Malays gave the name to the area due to the presence of tall trees known as the Tin Temak. The area was referred to as Bukit Timah because it was near a hill.
During the Japanese occupation, a Shinto shrine known as the Syonn Jinja was established at the site of the former British and Empire’s military base at Bukit Timah. It was similar to the controversial Yasukuni shrine in Japan. War memorials were also established at the site to honor the Japanese war dead.
POWs from the British and Japanese communities regularly visited this area to remember those who died during the occupation. The Japanese destroyed Syonan Jinja before they surrendered.
