During the Japanese occupation, a Shinto shrine known as the Syonn Jinja was established at the site of the former British and Empire’s military base at Bukit Timah. It was similar to the controversial Yasukuni shrine in Japan. War memorials were also established at the site to honor the Japanese war dead.
